Excerpt
If you read nothing else, read this.
From the Quick Start chapter.
- Perimenopause is the years leading up to menopause — usually 4 to 8, sometimes longer. Hormones swing. Periods change. Symptoms often start here.
- Menopause is officially the day you've gone 12 months without a period. After that, you're postmenopausal.
- You don't need a blood test to diagnose perimenopause in most women over 40. Symptoms plus cycle changes are usually enough.
- Heavy or prolonged bleeding is common — and a treatable cause of fatigue from iron-deficiency anemia. Ask about it.
- Hot flashes, night sweats, sleep, mood, and brain fog are real. They are not in your head, and they are treatable.
- Hormone therapy is the most effective treatment for many symptoms — for the right person. So are several non-hormonal options.
- Your long-term health matters now. Bone density, heart health, and metabolic health all shift. This is the window to set a baseline.
- You still need birth control during perimenopause if you don't want to get pregnant.
